Bringing the outdoors “in” is one of the things I love about gardening, and one of the best ways to do that is to grow flowers that cut well and can be used in simple arrangements throughout the house.  Currently, I have some of my late-blooming, baby-blue hydrangeas freshly cut and happily resting on the kitchen counter in my favorite white pitcher.  Lovely!

During mid fall, up until the frost, finding flowers to cut becomes a little more difficult, so I wanted to share with you some great options for bouquet-worthy blooms that fit the season.

fall dahlias 10-20-14I’ve heard it said that dahlias are the “peonies” of the fall, and I tend to agree! Dahlias are vibrant, exquisite flowers that bring not only the rich fullness of a full-bodied bloom, but also the amazing spectrum of maroons, butterscotches, and autumn-y colors that reflect this time of year.  Dahlias will thrive from summer to the first frost, so if you hail from a warm climate like Georgia, you can expect these flowering shrubs to bloom for you up until winter sets in.

Garden mums are also an exquisite addition to fall bouquets, including perhaps the lesser-known spider mums, which have a tea-cup shape bloom with thin, leggy petals that come in lots of different colors.

Because of our long blooming season here in the south, you may be able to step outside and see what summer plants are still sending out flowers, and mix those in together with these classic fall blooms, creating a totally unique arrangement!

Be creative as you bring the outdoors in, and happy arranging!
