12-05-14 red twig dogwoodWhile loved year-round for their green leaves and small white flowers, Red Twig Dogwood shrubs really come into their element in the winter months.  It is then that their red stems and branches are at the height of their color, either deep blood-red, cranberry red, light pink, or even orangey-yellow.

Young plants give out the best and brightest color in the winter, so after a few years of cold-season displays, cut the older limbs down quite close to the ground, encouraging new shoots to be sent out in the spring.

Plant in full sun for brightest color, in woodland gardens or other open areas, and in clusters to gain the maximum visual effect.
