When planning out the bare-bones structure of your garden, remember to consider the plants which will “anchor” the garden, or create a solid background and add weight to the landscape.
Small trees like tea olive, pear, dogwood, or cherry trees are ideal for this sort of thing, not only because of their beauty in the spring, summer, and fall, but also for the fact that the bare limbs in wintertime will still lend structure and presence to your outdoor spaces after all of the blooming annuals and tender perennials have died or gone dormant.
It’s really up to you which types of trees you will choose, but that’s half the fun! Simply remember that your choice will influence the atmosphere and flow of the garden as it grows and blooms in the spring and summer, as well.
