Nandina is one of the lesser-known shrubs that our landscaping experts like to use at Ninja Lawns. You may have never heard it’s common name or it’s alter-ego (“Heavenly Bamboo”), however, it has grown with little to no care in states such as South Carolina for over 100 years! Wow!
Large bushes can grow up to 10 feet tall in ideal conditions, with a projected girth of 3-5 feet. It’s leggy branching structure almost reminds us of actual bamboo plants, hence, it’s alternate name.
It’s semi-evergreen broad leaves are a pinkish color when young, deepening to green as they mature. Plant in partial shade to full sun, and keep in mind that sun exposure will effect the color of the leaves. Grouping the plants together may cause nandina to bring forth bright red berries in winter; however, single plantings will not bear fruit.
Nandina are great for use as foundation plants in landscaping beds or around borders, and it’s roots systems are easily transplanted whenever you like, except during the hottest days of summer.
