Virginia Sweetspire, or itea virginica, is a spectacular little shrub that delivers massive color and style — however, it is one of the South’s best-kept secrets!
Sweetspire comes in 2 main cultivars: “Henry’s Garnet” and “Little Henry”.
“Henry’s Garnet” is by far the most familiar and widespread of the two, sporting beautiful reddish-purple color in the fall months, and glossy dark green leaves with long slender flower clusters in the summer months.
Growing around 3-4 feet tall, and 4-6 feet wide, Virginia Sweetspire is a great pest-resistant alternative to burning bush varieties, and will hold onto it’s fall and winter foliage while temperatures are above 15-20 degrees fahrenheit – perfect for a warm climate like ours!
