There are so many varieties of hydrangeas on the market, and it may be confusing at time deciphering which one is which!
Oakleaf hydrangea cultivars have a few distinguishing characteristics that will help you pick them out. First, oakleaf hydrangeas have very large, multi-pointed leaves (reminiscent of actual oak leaves…fancy that!) These leaves are noted for changing from bright green in the spring and summer to reds, oranges, and yellows in the fall and winter, making it a great foundation plant for gardens and landscaping.
These types of hydrangeas grow very well in warm climates and need very well-drained soil in order to thrive…root-rot is a common problem for those plants left in boggy, wet areas.
A few cultivars that you may be able to find locally are “Snowflake”, “Harmony”, “Snow Queen”, and “Alice”. All beautiful options!
Tip: Buy oakleaf hydrangeas when in bloom to avoid accidentally purchasing the wrong cultivar…oftentimes, similar varieties’ leaves look the same but they will obviously bloom differently.
