12-19-14 american holleyAmerican holly almost needs no introduction, as it has been an iconic staple in winter decoration for many many years, both indoors and out.

Glossy, pointed leaves adorn these winter lovelies, and since they are evergreen, they are showcased especially in the cold months when most other greenery has died away.

And paired perfectly with it’s leaves, shiny, vibrant red berries bring an element of cheerfulness in a world of brown (or white!) These berries are actually called “drupes”, and prior to fruiting in the fall, they bloom white during April to June.

Classified as a small tree, or large shrub, you can expect American holly plants to grow up to 60 feet tall, although oftentimes they stay quite manageable at about 15-20 feet.
